Holidays March 2022

28th Feb 2022

Welcome to March!

Plan some extra family fun this month with these holidays.

March 2 is Read Across America Day. If you’ve ever wanted a really good reason to ignore the laundry and the dishes, this is it. Just pick up a book and read. When and where (and for how long!) is up to you. Anything from a candlelit bubble bath for one to a homemade fort with the kids will be perfect.

March 3 is World Book Day. This holiday, celebrated on the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, reminds us how lucky we are to have books in our lives. Virginia Wolff said, “A good book is never finished--it goes on whispering to you from the wall.” To celebrate, ask your kids what their favorite books are and why. Find out what heroes or villains stayed with them after they closed the cover. Ask a friend for a book recommendation, and share your own recommendations on social media. You could even use an Instagram poll to find out if your friends prefer hardcover books, paperback books, kindles, or audiobooks.

March 4 is National Day of Unplugging. In this technologically saturated world, unplugging is getting harder and harder. If you’re up for the challenge, then plan ahead. Tell your friends and family not to panic if you don’t respond right away. If there are things you have to do on your devices, plan to get them done during a specific timeframe, then walk away. Be intentional about the day. Enjoy the absence of pings! Leave a sweet note for a family member since texting won’t be an option. Take a long walk and enjoy the sounds of nature instead of the feel of AirPods in your ears. And, of course, enjoy some quality time with your favorite pen and planner.

March 7 is Fun Facts About Names Day. Do you know the story behind your name? Do your kids know what their names mean? All you need is google and you’re primed for a great dinner conversation.

March 10 is National Mario Day. If you grew up in the ’80s or ’90s, this is a no-brainer. Bust out that old (or new!) Nintendo and relive some amazing childhood memories. If you’re feeling a little extra, use a star-shaped cookie cutter to make grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner. Ain’t nobody got time for real dinner when there are extra lives to collect and levels to crush.

March 14 is National Pi Day. Not to mention Albert Einstein’s birthday! While this holiday is based on math and physics and circles, the celebrations are centered on, well, real pie. Make chicken pot pie for dinner. You could also host a pie-making contest or a pie-eating contest. If you’re short on time, stop by a bakery on your way home and simply enjoy a slice of your favorite pie with your favorite people.

March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. Go green! You could let your kids set a trap the night before to catch those sneaky leprechauns. For a little magic before you send your kids off to school, put a drop of green food coloring in the bottom of their cups before you set them on the table. Pour milk into their cups and watch their faces as the milk magically turns green right before their eyes. Add green or rainbow pancakes and you’ve got the breakfast of St Paddy’s Day champions.

March 20 is International Day of Happiness. This day is meant to spread positivity all over the world, no matter how big or how small. One of the best ways to celebrate is to show gratitude. This is a perfect day to start a gratitude journal! Finding something to be thankful for every day may sound daunting, but give it a try for one week and see what happens.

March 22 is Gryffindor Pride Day. Any Potterheads out there? This celebration can be as big as you want! Anything from a simple butterbeer while you read a Harry Potter book to a full-scale movie marathon and trivia party. But as Gryffindors are known for their bravery and heroism, maybe think of someone who’s been there for you when times were tough, and send them a quick note to let them know you’re glad they’ve got your back.

March 25 is International Waffle Day. There’s a never better reason to have breakfast for dinner. Waffles are popular all over the world, so why not try something new? Chicken and waffles, for example, are delicious but can take a lot of time to prepare. Here’s a shortcut: toast some thick and fluffy frozen waffles, cut them into fourths Use a toothpick to secure a Chick-fil-A nugget on top, then drizzle (or drown) it with syrup.

March 27 is National Neighbor Day. There are a million ways to celebrate this one, but they all come down to loving your neighbor. We care about the people who live around us so host a game night, or invite them over for treats. Or simply keep an eye out for a neighbor in their yard and instead of just waving, walk over and have a real conversation.

March 31 is National Crayon Day. I don’t know about you, but the Mister Rogers episode that showed us how crayons are made was jaw-dropping, life-changing television for me. It was the first time I ever realized that someone, somewhere, has to make the things we buy from the store. This day is pretty easy to celebrate. You can sit down and color a picture with your kids. Or gift yourself a mindfulness adult coloring book. You could also take those tiny broken crayons, melt them, and pour them into a silicone mold to make new crayons. Lastly, use this day to donate brand-new crayons to an elementary school or a crisis nursery near you.
